This story by the Washington Post from last Summer seemingly went unnoticed by many voters. However, in light of recent revelations regarding Mr. Brown's cavalier attitude towards finances, it can be seen as the bell-weather that it really was.
Although Mr. Brown explains away his excessive amounts of debt as simply an extension of the financial crises that effected many Americans, we should take a step back and realize that first, it is not the sworn duty of all Americans to manage hundreds of millions of dollars in budget expenses of a major city. Second, the average American has about $15K of credit card debt; this means that Kwame Brown has more than 3 times the national average!
If citizens of Washington do not step up and recall Kwame Brown from office it will suggest a willingness to allow our city to continue it's role as the laughingstock of American cities: no fiscal discipline and an administrative body that has run amuck.
